The short version
  • Many Western European shares and ETFs cost 0.05%. Tiered pricing starts at a EUR 1.25 minimum, while Fixed SmartRouting starts at EUR 3. Market exceptions matter.
  • Manual spot FX starts at 0.002% with a USD 2 minimum. Automatic conversion typically adjusts the exchange rate by 0.03% and charges no separate commission.
  • Standard accounts have no account minimum, inactivity fee or IBKR custody fee. Paid market data, specialist transfers, third-party charges and some account types can add costs.
  • IBKR usually suits larger or cross-border investors best. Minimum charges can weigh more heavily on very small recurring orders.

Interactive Brokers is often very cost-effective for European and UK investors, particularly if you trade across several markets, place meaningful orders or convert larger currency amounts. Its fee structure takes more work to understand than a single commission headline suggests.

Your total cost can include the trading commission, venue or regulatory charges, the bid-ask spread, currency conversion and optional services such as real-time market data. Fixed pricing is easier to predict. Tiered pricing can reduce the commission minimum, but it passes through more third-party charges. Neither plan is universally cheapest.

All figures in this guide were checked against Interactive Brokers Ireland and UK pricing pages on 17 August 2026. Fees can change, and the correct schedule depends on your legal entity, account type, market, product and routing choice. Check the current IBKR commission overview before trading.

Total cost

What IBKR fees European and UK investors pay

The commission shown beside an instrument is only one part of the calculation. A useful estimate is:

Total trading cost: commission + venue, clearing and regulatory charges + bid-ask spread + currency conversion + optional account services.

Taxes and product-specific charges can also apply. Two investors placing orders of the same value can pay different totals if they use different exchanges, currencies, routing choices or market-data packages.

EU retail accounts covered by this guide are generally held with Interactive Brokers Ireland Limited, regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland under reference C423427, subject to the reader's account agreement. Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under reference 208159. UK readers should check their agreement because entity and account type can affect available products and fee exceptions.

Pricing plans

Fixed versus Tiered pricing

Fixed offers the simpler structure. IBKR presents one commission rate that bundles many exchange and regulatory costs into a more predictable charge. Taxes and certain external costs can still apply, so Fixed is not completely all-inclusive.

Tiered separates IBKR's commission from venue, clearing, regulatory and other pass-through charges. Its lower minimum can make it cheaper for some orders, especially when third-party costs remain below the gap between the Tiered and Fixed minimums.

Germany is one market where both plans currently charge 0.05%, with a EUR 1.25 Tiered minimum and EUR 3 Fixed minimum. Adjust the order value to compare base commission. Tiered pass-through charges are not included.

These examples are not portable to every exchange. The current schedule shows a EUR 10 Fixed minimum in the Baltic region, PLN 15 in Poland and EUR 6 in Portugal. Tiered pricing is unavailable for Spain. Start with the country and exchange you intend to use.

Stocks and ETFs

European, UK and US commissions

European shares and ETFs

For many Western European markets, the first Tiered monthly band is 0.05% of trade value with a EUR 1.25 minimum. Fixed SmartRouting is also 0.05%, but with a EUR 3 minimum on the relevant markets. Once 0.05% of the order exceeds the minimum, the percentage rate matters more than the headline minimum. Under Tiered pricing, add exchange and other pass-through charges before deciding which plan costs less.

European pricing is not one regional tariff. Country-specific minimums and plan availability can differ materially.

UK-listed shares

The current first Tiered band is 0.05% with a GBP 1 minimum. Fixed SmartRouting is 0.05% with a GBP 3 minimum. Taxes and external charges can still change the final result. UK investors should also separate normal brokerage pricing from the ISA and Junior ISA monthly minimum activity fees covered below.

US shares and ETFs

US share pricing uses a per-share model. The current headline Tiered range is USD 0.0005 to USD 0.0035 per share, with a standard USD 0.35 minimum. Fixed pricing is USD 0.005 per share, with a standard USD 1 minimum. Monthly volume, routing, regulatory charges and the number of shares all matter. Fractional-share minimums can differ from whole-share minimums.

Currency conversion

Manual versus automatic FX

With manual spot FX, you initiate a currency conversion and pay a separate commission. The first monthly band is 0.20 basis point, equal to 0.002% of the trade value, with a USD 2 minimum or currency equivalent.

With automatic conversion, IBKR typically adds or subtracts 0.03% from the exchange rate that would otherwise apply. It does not charge a separate commission on the automatic conversion.

The nominal break-even point between a 0.03% automatic adjustment and the USD 2 manual minimum is about USD 6,667 equivalent. Test a conversion amount below.

Other assets

Options, futures, bonds and funds

IBKR's broader product range can suit experienced, multi-market investors, but each product has its own schedule. The current commission overview shows US options at USD 0.15 to USD 0.65 per contract under Tiered pricing and USD 0.65 under Fixed. US futures are USD 0.25 to USD 0.85 per contract under Tiered and USD 0.85 under Fixed.

Those are headline commissions, not complete trading costs. Exchange, clearing, regulatory, tax and contract-specific charges can apply. Bonds, mutual funds, spot currencies and other products also have separate schedules.

Beyond commissions

Market data, account fees and withdrawals

Market data

IBKR includes free real-time streaming data for US-listed stocks and ETFs from Cboe One and IEX. This is non-consolidated data, so it is not the same as a full consolidated US market feed.

Free delayed data is available for other products where offered, and clients receive up to 100 free snapshot quotes per month. Paid subscriptions vary by exchange, data level and professional status. They are billed for a full month and are not prorated. IBKR provides a live market-data selector.

For help choosing between its trading interfaces, see our Interactive Brokers mobile apps comparison.

Account minimums, inactivity and custody

Standard Individual, Joint and Organisation accounts currently show a USD 0 account minimum and USD 0 inactivity fee. IBKR states that it charges no custody fee, although third-party custody or maintenance charges can still apply to certain securities and markets.

UK adult ISA and Junior ISA accounts are exceptions to the no-recurring-account-cost headline. The current UK ISA page states a GBP 3 monthly minimum activity fee for an adult ISA and GBP 1 for a Junior ISA.

Withdrawals

IBKR currently allows two free withdrawal requests per calendar month. After the second withdrawal, the current EMEA schedule shows:

2
Free withdrawal requestsEvery calendar month
EURBank transferEUR 8After the free allowance
EURSEPAEUR 1After the free allowance
GBPBank transferGBP 7After the free allowance
GBPBACS, GIRO, ACH, EFT or SEPAGBP 1After the free allowance

Third-party bank fees can still be deducted. Specialist asset movements such as DRS, DWAC, Asian asset transfers and depository changes have separate charges.

Costs that are easy to miss

  • Pass-through charges: a lower Tiered minimum does not guarantee a lower final trade cost.
  • Taxes and market-specific charges: Fixed bundles many costs, but some external charges remain.
  • Bid-ask spreads: the spread is an execution cost for both securities and currency trades.
  • Small manual FX conversions: the USD 2 minimum can outweigh the 0.002% rate.
  • Full-month data billing: paid subscriptions are not prorated.
  • Account-type exceptions: UK ISA and Junior ISA accounts have monthly minimum activity fees.
  • Specialist transfers: free cash withdrawals do not make every transfer free.
  • Fractional-share minimums: the whole-share minimum may not apply.
Investor fit

When IBKR is and is not cost-effective

Small recurring investor

IBKR can be less compelling if you invest very small amounts frequently. Minimum commissions can become a large percentage of each purchase, and a USD 2 manual FX minimum is expensive relative to a small conversion. Tiered pricing and automatic FX can reduce that friction, but a simpler broker may still be cheaper or easier. Our Trading 212 versus Interactive Brokers comparison covers the broader choice.

Larger global investor

IBKR is often at its most cost-effective for investors placing meaningful orders across several currencies and markets. Percentage commissions become more relevant than minimums, and manual FX can have a lower nominal cost once the conversion is large enough. Venue, routing, spreads and market-data subscriptions can still change the result.

Active trader

An active trader may benefit from Tiered pricing and activity-dependent commission bands, but pass-through fees and required live data can materially change the total. Fixed is easier to forecast. Tiered can be more competitive only after the trader models the complete schedule for the products and venues used.

UK ISA or Junior ISA user

The GBP 3 adult ISA and GBP 1 Junior ISA monthly minimum activity fees belong in the annual comparison. Do not compare an IBKR ISA with a standard brokerage account using trading commissions alone.

Investor who prioritises simplicity

IBKR may not be the best fit if you want one flat fee or the simplest local app and tax experience. Its breadth creates more decisions about pricing plans, exchanges, currency conversion and market data. For the broader platform assessment, read our full Interactive Brokers review for EU investors.

Borrowing costs

Margin rates in context

Margin is separate from trading commissions. On 17 August 2026, IBKR showed first-tier rates of 3.732% for EUR debit balances up to EUR 90,000 and 5.220% for GBP debit balances up to GBP 80,000. Interest accrues daily, is posted monthly, uses blended tiers and can change without notice. Use IBKR's live margin rates and calculator. Margin is for experienced investors, and losses can exceed the value of the original investment.

Our view

Verdict

Interactive Brokers can be one of the most cost-effective choices for European and UK investors who use its global reach, place meaningful orders and manage currency conversion deliberately. Its advantage is less clear for very small recurring purchases, investors who need several paid real-time data feeds or anyone who values the simplest fee structure over market breadth.

We would choose Fixed pricing when predictability matters more than reducing the minimum commission. We would consider Tiered when the lower minimum and relevant activity bands outweigh the venue and other pass-through charges. Check the market, order size, routing and currency conversion method together.

FAQ

Interactive Brokers fees FAQ

Standard Individual, Joint and Organisation accounts currently show a USD 0 inactivity fee. Account-specific charges can still apply, including monthly minimum activity fees for UK ISA and Junior ISA accounts.

Neither is universally cheaper. Fixed is more predictable because many costs are bundled. Tiered has lower minimums on many markets, but venue, clearing, regulatory and other pass-through charges must be added. Compare the complete cost for your exchange, order size, routing and monthly activity.

Manual spot FX costs 0.002% in the first monthly band, subject to a USD 2 minimum or currency equivalent. Automatic conversion typically adjusts the exchange rate by 0.03% and has no separate commission.

Automatic conversion has the lower nominal charge for small amounts where the USD 2 manual minimum dominates. Manual conversion becomes nominally cheaper at about USD 6,667 equivalent under the current headline rates, before spread and execution differences. This threshold is illustrative, not guaranteed.

IBKR states that it does not charge a custody fee. Third-party custody or maintenance fees can still apply for certain securities and markets.

IBKR currently allows two free withdrawal requests per calendar month. Later withdrawals are charged according to the currency and method, and third-party bank fees can still apply.

Some data is included. IBKR provides free non-consolidated real-time streaming data for US-listed stocks and ETFs through Cboe One and IEX, delayed data where offered, and up to 100 free snapshot quotes per month. Other real-time exchange feeds require paid subscriptions.

The current UK schedule states a GBP 3 monthly minimum activity fee for an adult ISA and GBP 1 for a Junior ISA. Check the current page before opening or funding the account.

Not necessarily. Fractional-share minimums can differ from standard whole-share minimums, so check the relevant commission line before relying on the USD 0.35 Tiered or USD 1 Fixed standard minimum.
