Coinbase vs Bitvavo: Which Is Better for Dutch Investors?

The short version
  • Both are MiCA-authorised, so regulation does not decide this comparison. Coinbase holds a MiCA licence via Luxembourg's CSSF; Bitvavo holds a MiCAR licence from the Dutch regulator, the AFM, and has been AML-registered with De Nederlandsche Bank since 2020. Both can serve Dutch investors under the EU framework.
  • Bitvavo is the lower-cost, Dutch-native pick. Entry fees are 0.15% maker and 0.25% taker, iDEAL and SEPA deposits are free, euro withdrawals to a linked bank account are free, and more than 400 cryptoassets are available. For straightforward euro spot trading in the Netherlands it is hard to beat on cost.
  • Coinbase makes the stronger all-round case for regular and higher-value investors. Its NASDAQ-listed parent publishes audited accounts, it offers deep liquidity, self-custody through Coinbase Wallet and regulated EU crypto futures. Coinbase One can also remove trading fees from eligible simple spot trades within a monthly limit, although a spread still applies and exclusions vary by tier.
  • The verdict depends on what you value. Bitvavo wins on entry-level spot fees. Coinbase stands out for public-company transparency, product breadth, global liquidity and a clearer path from simple buying to Advanced trading, Coinbase One and self-custody, with the €15 welcome offer as a small extra.

Coinbase and Bitvavo are two of the names Dutch crypto investors weigh up most often. The EU transition period for existing crypto providers ended on 1 July 2026, making authorisation status an essential first check. Coinbase and Bitvavo both clear that bar, so this comparison comes down to cost, product range, ownership and the way you plan to trade.

Coinbase is one of the largest global exchanges, US-listed and focused purely on crypto. Bitvavo is the home-grown Amsterdam exchange that has become the default for cost-conscious euro users, regulated in the Netherlands by the AFM. Both are crypto-only, so this comparison covers fees, regulation and safety, what you can hold, the Box 3 tax angle, and the welcome offer, then gives a verdict by use case.

Cryptoassets are highly volatile and largely unregulated in the EU. Your capital is at risk and you can lose the money you invest, with no investor-protection scheme covering crypto losses. Do your own research and only invest money you can afford to lose.

Regulation

Both Are Fully MiCA-Licensed

Under the EU's MiCA rules, a crypto-asset service provider needs the relevant authorisation to serve EU customers after the applicable transition deadline. The transition period for existing providers ended on 1 July 2026. Coinbase and Bitvavo both appear in the official register through their respective EU entities.

Bitvavo is licensed under MiCAR by the Dutch regulator, the AFM, through its Amsterdam entity Bitvavo B.V., and has been AML-registered with De Nederlandsche Bank since 2020. Coinbase holds a MiCA licence issued by Luxembourg's regulator, the CSSF, and EU clients are served through Coinbase Luxembourg S.A.; its regulated EU crypto futures run through a separate Cyprus-authorised entity. For a Dutch investor who values a locally regulated provider, Bitvavo's AFM licence is a genuine point in its favour. For someone who values global scale and public accountability, Coinbase's listed parent is the equivalent draw. Either way, regulation is a baseline that both meet, not a tiebreaker on its own.

Costs

Fees Compared

Fees create the clearest separation between the two. Bitvavo keeps its standard entry rates low, while Coinbase asks you to choose the right service for your trading habits.

Bitvavo fees

Bitvavo charges 0.15% maker and 0.25% taker at the entry tier for euro order-book trades. Published rates fall with 30-day volume, reaching 0% maker and 0.02% taker at the highest tier. A Price Guarantee order can include a spread, so it should not be treated as identical to an order-book trade. iDEAL and SEPA deposits are free, as are euro withdrawals to a linked bank account. Some other deposit methods carry a fee. For everyday euro trading in the Netherlands, that combination is difficult to beat.

Coinbase fees

The simple Coinbase buy flow includes a spread and a transaction fee. Coinbase Advanced uses an order book and starts at roughly 0.40% maker and 0.60% taker, with rates falling as 30-day volume rises. SEPA deposits are free; cashing out by SEPA carries a small flat fee.

Why Coinbase One matters for regular traders

Coinbase One can change the cost comparison for eligible members. Simple spot trades can carry zero trading fees within the monthly limit shown in the member home, and higher tiers can add benefits such as boosted staking rewards and priority support. Coinbase still includes a spread when you buy, sell or convert, and the zero-fee benefit excludes Coinbase Advanced, DEX fees and derivatives. Tier availability, limits and pricing vary by country, so check the terms shown in your account. For someone who trades consistently and values the broader Coinbase product set, the membership can make Coinbase more compelling than a comparison of entry fees alone suggests.

The practical read: Bitvavo has the lower standard entry fee for euro spot trading. Coinbase offers more ways to fit the account to your habits: Advanced for order-book execution, Coinbase One for eligible simple trades within a monthly limit, and deep liquidity on major coins. Compare the full cost and the features you plan to use.

Coinbase pairs its higher standard fees with the scale and disclosure of a large, listed company. Those qualities can justify the difference for investors who value them.

What you can hold

What You Can Hold

Both are crypto-only, so unlike an all-rounder such as Bitpanda neither holds stocks, ETFs or metals in the same account. The difference is in depth and breadth of crypto features rather than asset classes.

Coinbase offers 300+ cryptoassets, deep liquidity on major pairs, staking on eligible networks, regulated EU crypto futures, and Coinbase Wallet for self-custody. It gives a beginner room to progress from simple buying to Advanced trading, a Coinbase One membership and derivatives without opening a separate account. Bitvavo lists more than 400 cryptoassets and combines low-cost spot trading with Earn and a Pro Mode that includes TradingView charts and multiple order types. It also offers leveraged long and short positions of up to 10x on selected assets, but not regulated crypto futures. Crypto held with either provider sits outside EU investor-compensation and deposit-guarantee schemes.

Tax

Crypto Tax in the Netherlands

Dutch crypto tax works the same whichever provider you use, because it follows you rather than the exchange. Crypto held by a private investor sits in Box 3, the tax on savings and investments, not under a capital-gains-on-disposal system, so you can owe tax whether or not you have sold. Your holdings are valued at their market value on 1 January, the reference date, using the price at the exchange where you hold them.

For 2026, Box 3 applies a deemed return (fictief rendement) of 6.00% on investments, including crypto, taxed at a flat 36%, with a tax-free allowance (heffingvrij vermogen) of €59,357 per person, or double that for fiscal partners. There is a counter-evidence rule (tegenbewijsregeling): if your actual total Box 3 return was lower than the deemed figure, you can ask to be taxed on the lower, real return. A shift to taxing actual gains rather than a deemed return is planned for 2028, but is not yet final. Under DAC8, qualifying crypto providers collect reportable data from 1 January 2026, with the first reports due in 2027. Bitvavo provides an annual balance statement and transaction export to help you prepare your return, but it does not provide personal tax advice. Confirm your own position with a belastingadviseur.

Protection

Safety and Track Record

Both are licensed in the EU and must meet MiCA safeguarding requirements. Two differences are worth weighing.

The first is corporate transparency. Coinbase's parent, Coinbase Global, is listed on the NASDAQ under the ticker COIN, so it files audited accounts and operates under public-market scrutiny, and it has never been hacked at the custody level. Bitvavo is privately held, so there is less public financial disclosure. It says most customer assets are held with specialist custody providers. Bitvavo's Account Guarantee is a conditional pilot that may reimburse eligible losses caused by unauthorised account access and withdrawals, up to €100,000. It is not a bank deposit guarantee, insurance for euro balances or protection against market losses.

The second is recent history. In 2025 Coinbase disclosed that bribed overseas support contractors had exposed the personal data of around 69,461 customers, including names, addresses and ID images. No funds, passwords or private keys were taken, Coinbase refused the ransom demand and pledged to reimburse anyone socially engineered into sending funds. Bitvavo, like Coinbase, draws recurring complaints about account freezes and slow, automated support. With either exchange, two-factor authentication is essential, and self-custody is worth considering for larger holdings.

Coinbase strengths
  • A large, liquid global exchange with deep order books on major coins
  • Parent company listed on the NASDAQ (COIN), so group accounts are public and audited
  • Simple for beginners, with lower-cost Advanced trading and Coinbase One benefits for eligible regular traders
  • MiCA-licensed across the EU (Luxembourg CSSF), with regulated EU crypto futures and staking
Coinbase trade-offs
  • The simple buy screen is expensive: a spread plus a fee, around 2% all-in by bank transfer and more by card
  • Fewer cryptoassets available to EU users (300+) than Bitvavo offers
  • A 2025 data breach exposed some customers’ personal data, though no funds, passwords or keys were taken
  • Account locks and slow, heavily automated support are recurring complaints from real users
Bitvavo strengths
  • Among the lowest fees in Europe: 0.15% maker and 0.25% taker, falling with volume
  • Free iDEAL and SEPA deposits, plus free euro withdrawals to a linked bank account
  • Amsterdam-based and MiCAR-licensed by the Dutch AFM, with local recourse
  • More than 400 cryptoassets, Pro Mode trading tools and built-in staking through Earn
Bitvavo trade-offs
  • Crypto only, with no stocks, ETFs, metals or regulated crypto futures
  • Account freezes and AML or KYC checks can hold funds, a recurring user complaint
  • Support is increasingly automated, and human escalation can be slow
  • Privately held, so there is less public financial disclosure than a listed company
Welcome offer

The Coinbase Welcome Offer

Treat a sign-up bonus as a small extra, because the fees and features you use for years matter more than a one-off reward. Coinbase currently runs a straightforward offer for new investors in Europe.

Coinbase gives eligible new EU and EEA users 15 euro in Bitcoin after they sign up through the link and make a first trade of any amount. There is no promo code to type, the reward is paid in Bitcoin so its value moves with the market, and it is not available in the UK, where crypto promotions are restricted. The offer runs until 31 December 2026. We cover the full terms in our Coinbase bonus guide. Bitvavo offers eligible new users who join through participating referral or affiliate campaigns fee-free trading on the first €10,000 for seven days. Any additional cash or crypto incentive depends on the campaign, so there is no universal fixed €15 Bitvavo reward to compare with Coinbase's offer.

Verdict

Verdict: Which Should You Choose?

Both are MiCA-authorised, so the decision is about the experience and products you will use. Bitvavo has the lower standard spot-trading fee. Coinbase makes the stronger overall case for investors who want one account that can grow with them.

Coinbase is our pick for the more complete crypto setup. Its listed and audited parent, deep liquidity, 300+ cryptoassets, regulated EU futures and Coinbase Wallet give it breadth that Bitvavo does not match. Coinbase One adds a meaningful benefit for eligible regular traders through zero trading fees on simple spot trades within a monthly limit, plus tier-dependent benefits such as boosted staking rewards and priority support. A spread still applies, and Advanced, DEX fees and derivatives are excluded, but the membership makes Coinbase's case stronger than its standard fee table alone.

Bitvavo is the value pick for standard euro spot trading. Its 0.15% maker and 0.25% taker entry fees, free iDEAL and SEPA deposits, and euro-native Amsterdam setup make it a strong choice for cost-conscious Dutch investors. Its current Pro Mode and selected leveraged positions also make it more capable than a basic buy-and-hold exchange.

Some Dutch investors may use Bitvavo for low-cost euro purchases and Coinbase for its broader trading, membership and self-custody options. This is not investment advice. Review the current terms, costs and risks before opening an account.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Bitvavo has the lower standard entry fee for most spot trades: 0.15% maker and 0.25% taker. Coinbase Advanced starts at roughly 0.40% maker and 0.60% taker, while the simple Coinbase buy flow includes a spread and a transaction fee. Coinbase One changes the calculation for eligible regular traders because simple spot trades can carry zero trading fees within the member's monthly limit, although a spread still applies and Coinbase Advanced, DEX fees and derivatives are excluded. Compare the current fee pages and your Coinbase One tier before deciding.

Yes, both are fully licensed to serve EU and Dutch clients. Bitvavo holds a MiCAR licence from the Dutch regulator, the AFM, through its Amsterdam entity Bitvavo B.V., and has been AML-registered with De Nederlandsche Bank since 2020. Coinbase holds a MiCA licence issued by Luxembourg's regulator, the CSSF, and EU users are served through Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. Regulation is a baseline, not a ranking: it means each is authorised and must segregate client assets, but it does not protect you from crypto's price swings, and no investor-compensation scheme covers crypto losses. For a Dutch reader the edge tilts slightly to Bitvavo, because its regulator is local.

Both support iDEAL. On Bitvavo, iDEAL deposits are free and near-instant, which is why it is the everyday favourite for Dutch users, and SEPA bank transfers are free too. Coinbase also supports iDEAL natively for Dutch users, and its SEPA deposits are free, but the higher purchase cost is the headwind rather than the funding rail. If low cost and a smooth euro experience are your priority, Bitvavo is the cleaner fit.

The tax rules are the same with either exchange, because they follow you rather than the provider. Dutch private investors hold crypto in Box 3, the tax on savings and investments, not as a capital gain on sale, so you can owe tax whether or not you sold. Holdings are valued at their market value on 1 January, and for 2026 Box 3 uses a deemed return of 6.00% on investments, taxed at a flat 36%, with a tax-free allowance of €59,357 per person. If your actual return was lower than the deemed one, the counter-evidence rule (tegenbewijsregeling) lets you be taxed on the lower figure. Under DAC8, qualifying crypto providers collect reportable 2026 data from 1 January 2026, with the first reports due in 2027. This is general information, not tax advice, so check your own position.

Both are licensed in the EU and must meet MiCA safeguarding requirements. Bitvavo says most customer assets are held with specialist custody providers. Its Account Guarantee is a conditional pilot that may reimburse eligible losses caused by unauthorised account access and withdrawals, up to €100,000. It is not deposit insurance and does not cover crypto price losses. Coinbase adds the reassurance of a NASDAQ-listed, audited parent under public-market scrutiny, though in 2025 it disclosed that bribed support contractors had exposed the personal data of around 69,461 customers; no funds, passwords or keys were taken, and Coinbase refused the ransom. Turn on two-factor authentication and consider self-custody for larger holdings with either provider.

Coinbase combines public-company transparency, deep liquidity, regulated EU crypto futures and a direct route to self-custody through Coinbase Wallet. Coinbase One can also make regular simple spot trading more competitive for eligible members by removing trading fees within a monthly limit, although a spread still applies and exclusions include Coinbase Advanced, DEX fees and derivatives. Bitvavo remains cheaper at its standard entry tier, but Coinbase offers a broader progression from beginner buying to advanced trading, subscription benefits and self-custody.

The EU transition period for existing crypto providers ended on 1 July 2026. A provider needs the relevant MiCA authorisation to continue serving EU customers lawfully after the applicable deadline. Coinbase and Bitvavo both appear as authorised providers through their respective EU entities. If you are moving from another exchange, check the official regulator register and the transfer terms on both sides before acting.
