Coinbase vs Bitpanda: Which Is Better for German Investors?

The short version
  • Both are fully authorised for the EU. Coinbase holds a MiCA licence via Luxembourg's CSSF and a German BaFin crypto-custody licence. Bitpanda holds MiCAR authorisations from Germany's BaFin and Austria's FMA.
  • Coinbase is the crypto-focused global heavyweight. Its parent, Coinbase Global, is listed on the NASDAQ (COIN), so its accounts are public and audited. Coinbase Advanced lowers trading fees, while Coinbase One adds zero-fee simple spot trades within tier limits, boosted staking rewards and support benefits.
  • Bitpanda is the German-language all-rounder. Its app holds 650+ cryptocurrencies plus 10,000+ real stocks, ETFs and ETCs, as well as metals. Bitpanda Fusion starts at a 0.25% trading fee and falls with volume.
  • Coinbase stands out for a crypto-first account. Pick Coinbase for deep liquidity, a listed parent and the combination of Advanced and Coinbase One. Pick Bitpanda if you want crypto and traditional investments in one European app.

Coinbase and Bitpanda are two of the names German crypto investors weigh up most often. The EU's transitional MiCA period ended on 1 July 2026, making authorisation an essential first check. Coinbase and Bitpanda both appear in ESMA's authorised provider register, so the useful comparison is how their products, costs and account experience differ.

Coinbase is the largest global exchange, US-listed and focused purely on crypto. Bitpanda is the home-grown European all-rounder, regulated in Germany by BaFin, that now holds crypto, stocks, ETFs and metals in a single app. This comparison covers the things that decide it for a German investor: fees, regulation and safety, what you can hold, the German tax angle, and the welcome offer, then gives a verdict by use case.

Cryptoassets are highly volatile and largely unregulated in the EU. Your capital is at risk and you can lose the money you invest, with no investor-protection scheme covering crypto losses. Do your own research and only invest money you can afford to lose.

Regulation

Both Are Fully MiCA-Licensed

Start here, because it reframes the whole comparison. Under the EU's MiCA rules, a crypto-asset service provider needs authorisation to continue serving EU customers after the applicable transition. Both Coinbase and Bitpanda appear in ESMA's register of authorised providers.

Coinbase holds a MiCA licence issued by Luxembourg's regulator, the CSSF, and German clients are now served through Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. It has also held a German BaFin crypto-custody licence since 2021, the first issued in Germany. Bitpanda went one better on timing: it was the first major crypto firm to secure a full MiCAR licence, and that licence came from Germany's own regulator, BaFin, in January 2025, alongside authorisation from Austria's FMA. For a German investor who values a locally regulated provider, Bitpanda's BaFin licence is a genuine point in its favour. For someone who values global scale and public accountability, Coinbase's listed parent is the equivalent draw. Either way, regulation is a baseline that both meet, not a tiebreaker on its own.

Costs

Fees Compared

Fees are where most of the real money is won or lost, and both providers pair an easy default screen with a cheaper advanced service in the same account. Knowing which route you are using can matter more than the name on the account.

Coinbase fees

The simple Coinbase buy screen builds a spread into the price and adds a fee on top. In practice that works out around 2% all-in on a typical bank-funded buy, and more if you pay by card. Coinbase Advanced removes the simple-buy spread and charges a maker-taker fee of roughly 0.40% maker and 0.60% taker at the entry tier, falling as your 30-day volume rises. SEPA deposits are free; cashing out by SEPA carries a small flat fee.

Why Coinbase One matters for regular traders

Coinbase One adds a stronger option for someone who trades consistently but still values a straightforward app. Eligible simple spot trades carry zero trading fees within the monthly limit shown in the member account, and selected tiers add boosted staking rewards and support benefits. A spread still applies. Coinbase Advanced, DEX fees and derivatives are excluded, so it is not a blanket promise of free trading. Even with those limits, the combination of simple buying, Advanced and Coinbase One gives Coinbase the more flexible crypto-only setup in this comparison.

Bitpanda fees

Bitpanda Broker includes an asset-tier trading fee in its firm quote: 0.99% for Bitcoin and stablecoins, 1.49% for other crypto, and 2.49% for Spotlight assets and coins below Bitpanda's stated market-cap threshold. The cheaper route is Bitpanda Fusion, where fees start at 0.25% per trade and fall to 0.02% at the highest volume tiers. Deposit and withdrawal costs depend on the payment method. For an active trader comparing only published entry fees, Fusion starts below Coinbase Advanced, while Coinbase One may be more compelling for eligible simple spot trading within its monthly limit.

The practical read: compare the exact service you will use. Bitpanda Fusion publishes the lower entry fee, while Coinbase combines deep order books, Advanced trading and Coinbase One's zero-trading-fee benefit for eligible simple spot trades within tier limits. The better fit depends on trade type, size and frequency.
What you can hold

What You Can Hold

This is the clearest structural difference between the two. Coinbase is crypto and nothing else: more than 300 assets, staking on eligible networks, and a Visa debit card to spend a balance. If crypto is all you want, that focus is a feature, and Coinbase's scale supports deep liquidity on major markets.

Bitpanda is an all-in-one investing app. The same account reaches 650+ cryptos, more than 10,000 real stocks, ETFs and ETCs, precious metals and crypto indices. Whole shares are held as real securities and can be transferred out. Fractional positions generally carry no voting rights and cannot be transferred. For an investor who wants crypto beside a long-term securities portfolio in one German-language app, that breadth is the reason to pick Bitpanda. Crypto held with either provider sits outside investor-compensation schemes.

Tax

Crypto Taxes in Germany

German crypto tax works the same whichever provider you use, because it follows you rather than the broker, and the headline rule is unusually generous. Under section 23 of the Income Tax Act (EStG), gains on crypto you have held for more than one year are tax-free, with no upper limit. Sell within a year and the gain is taxed at your personal income-tax rate, but only once your total private-sale gains for the year reach 1,000 euro. That 1,000 euro is a Freigrenze, an all-or-nothing threshold: stay below it and the gain is tax-free; reach it and the whole gain, including the first 1,000 euro, becomes taxable.

A few things to keep straight. Staking and lending no longer stretch the holding period to ten years, so the one-year rule still applies, though the rewards themselves are taxed as income when you receive them. Under DAC8, providers collect transaction data from 1 January 2026 for the first reporting cycle in 2027. Coinbase provides tax information. Bitpanda's dedicated crypto tax report is limited to Austrian tax residents, while German users can download account statements and transaction history; tax handling for Bitpanda's real securities is a separate service. None of this is tax advice, so confirm your own position with a Steuerberater.

Protection

Safety and Track Record

Both keep the bulk of customer crypto in cold storage, both are licensed in the EU, and both segregate client assets, so on the fundamentals they are closely matched. Two differences are worth weighing.

The first is corporate transparency. Coinbase's parent, Coinbase Global, is listed on the NASDAQ under the ticker COIN, so it files audited accounts and operates under public-market scrutiny. Bitpanda is privately held, so there is less comparable public financial disclosure. That is visibility, not a safety guarantee.

The second is recent history. In 2025 Coinbase disclosed that bribed overseas support contractors had exposed the personal data of around 69,461 customers, including names, addresses and ID images. No funds, passwords or private keys were taken, Coinbase refused the ransom demand and pledged to reimburse anyone socially engineered into sending funds, but it remains a fair mark against them. Bitpanda has not had a comparable breach, though it attracts its own recurring complaints about withdrawal holds and slow support. With either provider, two-factor authentication is a must, and self-custody is worth considering for larger holdings.

Coinbase strengths
  • The largest, most liquid global exchange, with deep order books on major coins
  • Parent company listed on the NASDAQ (COIN), so group accounts are public and audited
  • Simple for beginners, with a clear path to low fees through Coinbase Advanced
  • MiCA-licensed across the EU (Luxembourg CSSF) and a German BaFin crypto-custody licence since 2021
Coinbase trade-offs
  • The simple buy screen is expensive: a spread plus fees, around 2% all-in by bank transfer and more by card
  • Crypto only, no stocks, ETFs or metals in the same account
  • A 2025 data breach exposed some customers personal data, though no funds, passwords or keys were taken
  • The EU Coinbase Card has no spending cashback (that perk is US only)
Bitpanda strengths
  • One EU-regulated app for 650+ cryptos, 10,000+ real stocks and ETFs, plus metals
  • Regulated by Germany's BaFin and the first major firm to hold a full MiCAR licence
  • Native German app and support, with downloadable account statements and transaction history
  • Bitpanda Fusion fees from 0.25%, plus 1% cashback on qualifying crypto-funded card purchases
Bitpanda trade-offs
  • The standard Broker screen includes an asset-tier trading fee of up to 2.49% in its firm quote
  • Withdrawal holds and slow support are recurring complaints from real users
  • Fractional shares carry no voting rights and cannot be transferred out to another broker
  • Privately held, so there is less public financial disclosure than a listed company
Welcome offer

The Coinbase Welcome Offer

Treat a sign-up bonus as a small extra rather than the main reason to choose an exchange, because the fees and features you use for years matter far more than a one-off reward. That said, Coinbase runs a straightforward one for new investors in Europe.

Coinbase gives new EU and EEA users 15 euro in Bitcoin after they sign up through the link and make a first trade of any amount. There is no promo code to type, the reward is paid in Bitcoin so its value moves with the market, and it is not available in the UK, where crypto promotions are restricted. The offer runs until 31 December 2026. We cover the full terms in our Coinbase bonus guide.

Bitpanda also runs periodic welcome and referral offers for new users, which change regularly; check the current terms on its own site before signing up.

Verdict

Verdict: Which Should You Choose?

Coinbase is the stronger all-round choice here for an investor whose priority is crypto. It combines a straightforward app, deep markets, Advanced trading, Coinbase One benefits for eligible regular traders, and the disclosure of a listed and audited parent. That package is harder to match than a simple fee-table comparison suggests.

Pick Coinbase if you mainly buy, hold or trade crypto and value liquidity, public-company transparency and the choice between a simple flow, Advanced and Coinbase One. Pick Bitpanda if the decisive feature is holding crypto alongside stocks, ETFs and metals in one BaFin-regulated German-language app.

Some German investors may still use both, Coinbase for deep crypto markets and Bitpanda as the all-in-one investing account. This is not investment advice. Compare the exact service, costs and terms that apply to you before opening an account.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends which trading experience you use. Coinbase's simple buy flow adds a spread plus a fee, while Bitpanda Broker includes an asset-tier trading fee of 0.99%, 1.49% or 2.49% in its firm quote. On the advanced services, Bitpanda Fusion starts at 0.25% and falls to 0.02% at the highest volume tier, while Coinbase Advanced starts at roughly 0.40% maker and 0.60% taker. Coinbase One can change the calculation for regular spot traders because eligible simple trades carry zero trading fees within the member's monthly limit, although a spread still applies and Advanced, DEX and derivatives are excluded. Confirm the current fees on each provider's own page before deciding.

Yes, both are fully licensed to serve EU and German clients. Coinbase holds a MiCA licence issued by Luxembourg's regulator (the CSSF), and German users are served through Coinbase Luxembourg S.A.; it has also held a German BaFin crypto-custody licence since 2021. Bitpanda was the first major crypto firm to receive a full MiCAR licence, granted by Germany's own regulator, BaFin, in January 2025, and is also authorised by Austria's FMA. Regulation is a baseline, not a ranking: it means each is authorised and must segregate client assets, but it does not protect you from crypto's price swings, and no investor-compensation scheme covers crypto losses.

The tax rules are the same with either provider because they follow you rather than the account. Under section 23 of the German Income Tax Act (EStG), gains on crypto held for more than one year are tax-free, with no upper limit. If you sell within a year, the gain is taxed at your personal income-tax rate once total private-sale gains for the year reach the 1,000 euro Freigrenze. Coinbase provides tax information, while Bitpanda gives German users downloadable statements and transaction history rather than its Austrian-only crypto tax report. Under DAC8, providers collect 2026 transaction data for the first reporting cycle in 2027. This is general information, not tax advice, so check your position with a Steuerberater.

Both keep the bulk of customer crypto in cold storage and are licensed in the EU, so on the fundamentals they are closely matched. In 2025 Coinbase disclosed that bribed overseas support contractors had exposed the personal data of around 69,461 customers, such as names, addresses and ID images. No funds, passwords or private keys were taken, Coinbase refused the ransom and committed to reimburse anyone tricked into sending funds, but it is a fair mark against them. Bitpanda has not had a comparable breach, though it draws its own recurring complaints about withdrawal holds. As with any exchange, turn on two-factor authentication and consider self-custody for larger holdings.

Coinbase does not offer stocks or ETFs; it is a crypto-only exchange. Bitpanda offers real stocks, ETFs and ETCs held in a securities account, alongside metals. Whole shares can be transferred to another broker. Fractional positions generally carry no voting rights and cannot be transferred. If holding crypto and securities in one app appeals, that is Bitpanda's main draw over Coinbase.

Both providers offer a simple route and a lower-cost advanced service. Coinbase Advanced starts at roughly 0.40% maker and 0.60% taker, falling with volume. Bitpanda Fusion starts at 0.25% and drops to 0.02% at the highest tier. Coinbase One is the extra option for regular traders: eligible simple spot trades carry zero trading fees within the tier limit, with a spread still included. Coinbase Advanced, DEX fees and derivatives are excluded from that benefit.

Both are beginner-friendly, with clean apps, fast verification and fractional buying, so you can start small. Coinbase offers a simple first step into crypto, with a large coin selection and a straightforward app. Bitpanda suits a beginner who wants crypto and traditional investments such as stocks and ETFs in one place, with everything in German and German support on hand. Choose based on whether you want a crypto-focused app or an all-in-one account. This is not investment advice, so do your own research.

The EU's transitional MiCA period ended on 1 July 2026. Coinbase and Bitpanda both appear in the official ESMA register of authorised crypto-asset service providers, so each has a clear legal route to serve German clients. That regulatory clarity does not protect you from crypto losses, but it removes the uncertainty that applies when an exchange has no listed MiCA authorisation.
